Our members come from a variety of denominational backgrounds. For many, this is their first experience in a "Baptist" church. The Baptist denominations are part of the larger family of Protestant churches that believe in justification by faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Denominationally, we are part of the Connecticut branch of the American Baptist Churches (ABC), called ABCCONN (abcconn.org). Stepney has always held to the key ideals of the historic Baptist churches: We believe in the autonomy of the local church, baptism by full immersion in water, and the autonomy of the individual in all matters spiritual. We are a self-governing body of believers that receives no theological mandates from external governing bodies. We embrace the authenticity and the authority of the Bible, and purpose to live by the teachings found therein.
